rosa, 29 in napa. 36 degrees in fremont. and 39 degrees in san jose. so even inside the bay we are seeing some cold temperatures and probably colder over the next hour and a half or so. so we have freeze warnings up for almost the entire bay area for this morning and again i think a colder night overnight tomorrow night and into tomorrow morning. that's when we'll see some very cold temperatures around the bay area. highs today are still going to only be on the chilly side. it will be sunny and bright but these numbers only in the 40s and the 50s. we want to go out to kiet do in fremont now in the middle of the cold. >> reporter: i hate being cold so i thought hat, gloves, jacket. here we are live in fremont. the coldest part of any city it seems is the top of a bart platform. here at 5:01 a.m. it is 37 degrees. that's an improvement. it was 35 degrees a couple of minutes ago. we have footage of people getting ready for the cold

weather. we have been beating this drum all week long warning people the cold weather is coming. here it is. guess what. because christmas is just, what, 22 days away here, people love it. >> i'm ready to take this off. >> i'm bundling up and getting close to my hubby here to keep my warm. >> reporter: so back here live at the fremont bart station, there is plenty of frost on the vehicles out here. we will be staying out here bundles up all morning long. so live in fremont, kiet do, kpix 5. and going to need the seat warmers in your car today. if you are heading out on highway 4, so far, so good. in fact, now that we're past 5:00 a lot of the overnight roadwork has been picked up so you're just kind of cruising along out of antioch coming off the antioch bridge towards pittsburg-bay point into concord. eastbound roadwork should have been picked up as well so all lanes now open. similar story on nimitz 880 in

oakland. we had various lanes blocked blocked three of them between 16th and broadway towards downtown. that is all now gone. so you can see your east bay drive times are still in the clear only 14 minutes right now on westbound 580 between the altamont pass and 680. give it another half hour from now and that drive time will not likely look like that including the eastshore freeway also no delays through berkeley. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." back to you. 5:03. breaking news in san jose. a fire gutted a mobile home overnight. it started about 3 hours ago in the casa alondre mobile home park. firefighters are trying to find the person who lived in the home. it's out now. the cause is under investigation. developing news from idaho. search teams are looking for a san jose family and hopeful weather conditions will improve today. the pilot and his family disappeared sunday while flying from oregon to montana. today more people and more

planes will join the search. idaho search teams have detected a faint signal from the plane's emergency beacon but haven't been able to pinpoint where it was coming from in the rugged mountainous terrain near the landing strip. the smiths are a tight-knit mormon family. after spending thanksgiving weekend in oregon silicon valley executive dale smith left for butte, montana. his son daniel and his son's wife, his daughter amber and her fiance were in his single- engine beech bonanza, similar to the one pictured here. it ran into engine trouble over central idaho sunday. smith intended to land at the remote johnson creek airstrip seen in this youtube video but they never made it. >> the temperature really dropping tonight that's probably the biggest concern. they have their winter parkas and close clothes to layer up. but, you know, this is the third night out. >> reporter: smith's founding business partner rand kriech knows the wilderness is unforgiving but knows smith to be a cautious pilot. he is so intelligent.

to five felonies relating to misuse of public funds. the new case involves a count of impersonating a campaign committee. it stems from a mailer that prosecutors say fabricated to try and discredit a city council candidate. new details on sunday's train wreck in new york. the train operator says he was in a daze before the crash. marlie hall with the way the operator's union leader describes it. >> he zoned out. he had one of those where, whoa, like, you know, you drive your car and, you know, you stare at the same thing for so long and, you know, he -- he zoned and, uhm, he caught himself but he caught himself too late. reporter: rockefeller met with federal investigators yesterday afternoon. they won't comment on rockefeller's level of alertness. his lawyer says he is cooperating fully. the seven-car commuter train jumped the tracks sunday as it hit a curve traveling nearly three times the speed limit. >> there is no indication that

autopsies were done on both bodies. ballparker's publicly says says the actor -- walker's publicist says the actor was a passenger in the single car crash. autopsies are expected to show who was driving. city college showing a steep drop in enrollment for the spring semester. while the numbers are up at most community colleges, the total is down 26% at city college. it could close because of a loss of accreditation and another reason that a new requirement makes students pay before they enroll. don't expect to see messages like go giants or equality for all on muni buses anymore. mta has decided to drop those signs. that's after some riders found messages of team spirit or goodwill distracting. the agency says the intention was simply to show civic pride. sonoma county supervisors talked about establishing a new community law enforcement task

force. that's in response to complaints following the death of andy lopez. he was the santa rosa teen killed by a sheriff's deputy in october. the 13-year-old was carrying a bb gun that looked like an assault rifle. yesterday, supervisors also discussed creating a park to honor the teen. and a bill to renew a ban on plastic guns is halfway through the united states congress. the house voted yesterday to continue the undetectable firearms act for 10 more years. the senate could vote on the resolution when members return from thanksgiving recess monday. the current law expires the next day. >> we don't want to make it easy for terrorists and criminals to bring guns past metal detectors on to our planes and into secure environments. >> the ban has been unanimously reauthorized twice since it first passed in 1988. the nra says it's okay with continuing the ban but it is opposed to proposed changes. new this morning, governor jerry brown is making a push

along. >> good morning. traffic is looking great overall. no big accidents. a lot of overnight roadwork has been picked up. there are chain requirements on 50 if you are traveling to the sierra. roads open towards tahoe but be careful. around here it's the cold weather you may need your defroster before you head out for the morning drive but once you hit the road no hot spots like i said westbound 580 looks good. towards 680 and the dublin interchange, continuing out towards 238 past the castro valley y looks good. if you are doing any traveling along the peninsula, this is what it looks like 101 near lagoon way but it looks good down past the airport if you are coming into san bruno or the other direction on 101 heading into san francisco. highway 4 westbound live drive time sensors that 33 miles per hour just changed. we are seeing some slowdowns now past that "a" street exit towards somersville. once you get past antioch everything is good towards pittsburg-bay point and concord heading towards 242. here's a live look at a lot of our sensors around the east bay looking good including 580. 880 the nimitz freeway we have

and that is keeping the temperatures up just a bit in spots. it's 41 san francisco now. 29 in santa rosa. 31 and freezing in concord and 37 degrees in livermore. so as we head throughout the day today, you have the cold temperatures to begin with. and then i think chilly temperatures for highs today. we are going to struggle to get out of the 40s in some spots and only in the 50s in others. so plenty of sunshine but a chilly day ahead and a colder night tonight into tomorrow morning. i think the winds will be very calm. we'll have some very dry air in place and these temperatures again well down into the 20s. so that cold air making its way across the bay area not only today but the next few days and probably into the weekend. there is one weather system that wants to come our way as we head in toward friday likely to bring a few showers and maybe some low snow levels. temperatures around the state seeing 50s into the central valley today a cool 52 degrees but sunny into monterey bay and only 27 in lake tahoe. skies take clear all day long as you look at that across the bay area. you're going to see clear skies

anne makovec. >> i'm juliette goodrich. frank and michelle are off. time now 5:29. it is cold. kiet do is in fremont where temperatures are in the 30s. lawrence karnow has the forecast. >> we have seen some of the temperatures in the mid-20s in some of the north bay valleys but other parts of the country too. they are getting hit hard by this very cold air. skies clearing with dry conditions so temperatures really dropping in spots. in fact, some of the overnight lows down into the 20s in some spots inland. freeze warnings are up across much of the bay area except for san francisco. 20s and 30s frost everywhere and colder air tomorrow. temperatures expected to be in the 40s and 50s in the afternoon. very cold start to the day.

cold finish too. we'll go to kiet do out there in the freezing weather right now. how's it going, kiet? >> reporter: yeah, it could be worse, i guess. it's 37 degrees out here. it has been in the mid- to upper 30s all morning. so you mentioned that temperatures in the 20s and other spots so i feel kind of lucky out here. people bundled up in jackets, coats, gloves, you name it. we have been watching people sit in their cars until the very last minute and then jump out and make a mad dash to the bart platform and catch their trains. the cars that were parked here overnight most are covered in frost. we have been talking about this blast of cold air for days. just as it gets here, a woman by the name of gina bowden is catching a plane to new zealand where it is summer to get married. what do you think of the cold weather? >> we love it. we love the change in seasons. >> reporter: you don't look like you love it. jacket. we love it here. >> reporter: so 35 degrees just about an hour ago. so looks like the temperatures going back and forth but it's cold. and lawrence says it's getting colder. live in fremont, kiet do, kpix 5. so far things are continuing to back up on westbound 580. we are waiting for word when we are going to clear this big rig but it's still blocking a lane in a busy area north first street exit and looks like traffic is jammed now out of tracy coming from 205. live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, a lot of folks heading here later this morning but no big problems, no metering lights and all the roadwork on both spans both directions 80 look good. westbound 4 bottleneck between hillcrest and somersville past antioch exits. so overall east bay drive times look okay. really slow one is altamont pass through livermore valley commute. again that big rig is not

helping that drive. 880 though still in the clear as well as the eastshore freeway. so far no delay or weather- related alerts from the carquinez bridge to the maze. we'll have more updates coming up. new this morning, firefighters are looking for the person who lives in this mobile home. it was destroyed by a fire overnight and you can see the home now completely gutted. the fire started at about 2 a.m. in the casa alondre mobile home park on monterey road. the cause of the fire is under investigation. and a bay area man claims an off-duty cop took him down and broke his arm. the entire ordeal started after the two men got into an accident. kpix 5's joe vazquez with more on this unusual road rage story that will most likely end up in the courts. reporter: the two men pulled over the side of the highway to exchange insurance information. that's when according to the federal lawsuit filed today one of the men an off-duty concord police officer named kevin mansourian charged at the other

man 63-year-old walter weiland of oakland. weiland's lawyer says the cop started screaming profanities at her client. >> essentially asking him what the "f" are you doing? and then identified himself as an off-duty police officer. when my client asked for him to produce his badge, he said that he didn't have it on him. >> reporter: according to the lawsuit, officer mansourian then threw weiland to the ground and sat on him as they waited for chp to arrive. the whole time, weiland was telling him to get off because he has a heart problem. >> grabbed him, slammed him to the ground face first. our client's face was cut. and one of his hearing aids was dislodged and in that assault, our client's arm was broken. and the client keep in mind is a 63-year-old man. >> reporter: officer mansourian told sheriff's deputies it wasn't road rage. he thought weiland might have been drunk but investigators on the scene found no such evidence. while lapd is suing mansourian and -- weiland is suing mansourian and the city of

concord for wrongful arrests and excessive force civil rights violation. the city will defend the lawsuit and won't comment on pending litigation. joe vazquez, kpix 5. a shopper says a 15-year- old girl attacked her at the bay fair center in san leandro. the victim claims the teenager snatched her purse and then ran into a waiting car. this happened at the center's parking lot on monday. a witness saw the whole thing and called police. a popular cable tv host was killed in a motorcycle crash in san francisco. bill beckwith cohosted the show curb appeal on hdtv. a car hit and killed him on monday night as he rode through the lower haight near oakland and styner streets. it's not clear who was at fault. police say the driver of the car is cooperating and beckwith was 38 years old. happening today, the man accused of going on a deadly rampage at l.a.x. will make his first court appearance. paul ciancia will have a hearing this morning at a jail being held in federal custody.

investigators say ciancia targeted tsa officers when he pulled a semi-automatic rifle from a bag and opened fire inside terminal 3 on november 1. one tsa agent was killed. also happening today, 911 calls from that mass shooting at sandy hook elementary school will be made public. the connecticut state prosecutor originally wanted to keep the calls confidential to protect survivors and victims. but the state attorney has now dropped that fight. 20 children and six adults were killed in the 2012 shooting. tragedy struck as hundreds of skydivers gathered in the arizona desert. two skydivers died in a midair crash. the two were floating to the ground when they collided causing their parachutes to collapse. investigators are trying to learn what went wrong. >> both of their canopies were open and at the point that they collided it's estimated that they were 200 to 300 feet up in the air. once they collided, we are told both the canopies collapsed and they both fell to the ground. >> skydivers from around the

world are now in that area. saturday a group of 63 women set a record for an all-female formation while jumping head down. time now is 5:37. university of notre dame is taking on obamacare. the institution does not want to be forced to provide birth control coverage. it has filed a lawsuit claiming the requirement infringes on its religious beliefs. the law doesn't force institutions to provide coverage. instead, insurers must give employees a contraceptive option at no additional cost. notre dame considers that immoral. as for the white house, it's kicking off a three-week media blitz to get people to sign up. >> you got good ideas? bring them to me. let's go. but -- we're not repealing it as long as i'm president. >> president obama took on the republican critics of the bill yesterday. he said they want it to fail. republicans say the law is flawed. a site with the web address

and a growing number of retailers is offering customers a way to buy big ticket items that's generating some controversy. kpix 5's julie watts is on the consumerwatch with a warning. reporter: it sounds like a good idea, no interest at all on your purchase provided you pay it all off within a specified period of time, usually six months or a year. it's called deferred interest. it's a payment plan and it's offered by macy's, lowe's, best buy, j.c. penney, walmart, many others. but consumers union warns, there's a big catch. >> if the consumers pays late during this deferral period or hasn't paid off the initial purchase amount, then all of that accumulated interest even on the balance that they have paid off comes back and is added on to the consumer's balance. >> reporter: now, depending on the size of the purchase, that can amount to hundreds of dollars. and the interest rates are

considerably higher than general purpose credit cards. most customers don't realize the implications when they sign up for deferred interest plans and consumer advocates say if you do get trapped by one of these deals, you will pay for it. the contracts are binding and stores won't forgive that accumulated interest. you may want to think twice before complaining about your airline. the supreme court indicated today you may not have a leg to stand on when an airline revokes someone's frequent flyer status. that's exactly what happened to a delta frequent flyer who lost his status when he was dubbed a frequent complainer. northwest airlines which merged with delta in 2008 said it had, quote, sole judgment over the program's general terms and conditions and could revoke the man's platinum elite membership for any reason. the frequent flyer argued the airline was not acting in good faith and today the court heard testimony from both sides. a decision isn't expected until december but most justices indicated that it rules out
